Train services to resume soon from Dire Dawa to Djibouti port

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Passenger trains will soon start running between Dire Dawa, in eastern Ethiopia, and Djibouti port on the Gulf of Eden following the rehabilitation of a 100-kilometre section of the Ethio-Djibouti railway, railway officials announced here Friday. According to the railway manager, Ayele Wondwossen, trial runs were being made after completion of repair works on the rail track, which has 208 kilometres within Ethiopia. He said the passenger trains will provide service three days weekly. An Italian company was contracted to overhaul the damaged section of the railroad within a period of three years but it has taken six years to complete the job, Ayele said. Resumption of the rail service is expected to boost the economy of Dire Dawa regional capital city to which many Djiboutians resort during the hot season. The Ethio-Djibouti Railway line that links Addis Ababa to the sea started operation in 1890 during the reign of Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II.
